Latin dance history and classification

  • Long before people across the globe started dancing the Rumba or Salsa, South and Central America Indigenous Peoples found something that they liked about Latin dancing.   • Bachata
    This dance hails from the Dominican Republic. Like other Latin dances, Bachata is specified by fluent hip movements.
  • Mambo
    Came from Cuba. It appeared because of Swing and Cuban music fusion. This new-branded rhythm created the sensational Mambo – high-energetic dance.
  • Merengue
    It is from the Dominican origin. The main feature of the dance is that partners are always together – they make turns, cuddle, and make motions without separating.
  • Pasodoble
    Comes from Spanish roots thus was inspired by bullfights. The dance is about a conquest between the matador and the cape. Pasodoble is a passionate dance, characterized by tense and savagery.
  • Salsa
    Became popular in the USA in the 1970s. It is a spicy dance with Cuban and Columbia roots however has many variations.
